FAQs
Air conditioning involves machinery and a chemical called ‘refrigerant’ working together in a cycle. A fan blows warm air from inside through refrigerant-filled coils, letting cool air stay indoors as the heat is absorbed by the liquid refrigerant which turns into gas. The gas moves through a pipe to the outside unit where another set of coils releases heat until the gas becomes liquid again and returns to the indoor coils to repeat the process.

Air conditioning maintenance should be conducted once a year, though routine ‘DIY’ service such as replacing filters and checking vents is advised. A technician can provide guidance on upkeep between scheduled service appointments.
A few potential causes would be poor airflow due to closed vents or dirty filters, and coils that are low on refrigerant or so dirty they don’t absorb heat. Sometimes the cause of freezing is the failure of parts within an air conditioning system, which would require a technician to inspect and fix.
Ceiling fans move air in a way that makes indoor spaces comfortable enough for people to rely on air conditioning less, so while they aren’t helping air conditioning make the air cooler, they are helping reduce strain on and extending a unit’s life.
Air conditioning itself has not been known to cause sickness. However, mold and bacteria can grow in a unit that hasn’t been serviced by a technician for too long. It’s also possible for air conditioning to cause what feels like symptoms of sickness when too much humidity is removed or when running without enough ventilation.
Air conditioning systems use filters and regulate humidity within an indoor environment, so by design it’s great at warding off allergens. At the same time, mold spores can settle and grow on coils that haven’t been running, and a buildup of dust and dander can occur when filters are unchanged and ducts aren’t cleaned out. To prevent these from spreading indoors, a unit requires regular service.
